The few vaccinations that were recommended then were given once a year. I admit I cannot remember exactly what they were, but it seems to me nowadays there are more, and recommended to be administered twice a year,(some even more frequent then that) With that said, what are your thought's,and what are you vaccinating for?

After the initial injection, the horse has one four weeks later, another six months after that and then just annually. A lot of people don't get their horses vaccinated though. I imagine most livery yards insist on it? Would be interested to know.

In flat yards they vaccinate every six months, and also if brood mares about in racing yards geldings & colts are vaccinated with a herpes anti abortion vaccination. Tetunus is a must for any horse regardless of competing or not, it is a preventable illness and to not vaccinate every two years for tentus is neglect.

Currently the recommended vaccinations here are as follows; strangles,rabies,E/W/T,rhinoneumontis & influenza, potomic horse fever, and west nile. Both of my horses have been vaccinated as of spring 2009, however I choose not to vaccinate this fall since I have a private barn and do not plan on competing over the winter so there is no "risk factor". The research I have done on these vaccinations so far leaves me less then impressed with there protection value. So I'm still on the fence as to what I will vaccinate for this spring. I've recently read some articles about horses who were having serious reactions to vaccinations as well as an acquaintance lost her horse after she had her seasonal shots, which in most cases half are administered in spring and half in the fall. $$$$ I'm sorta thinking it's about revenue....

To compete we must have flu & Tetnus or Herpes & Tetnus (affliated) think you don't need to be vaccinated for unaffliated. The strangles vaccine as far as I am aware has not reached us yetm although it may have in the last 6 months, there was a big discussion sometime back in the press about it. No need for West Nile. I'm not surprised with all that lot you are not in a rush. Very interesting to read what you need to vaccinate for. I wonder what other countries vaccinate for. Please post if you live outside Europe, as I'd love to know.

I got my boy at 8 without having the jabs in 3 years so I had to restard them with the 4 weeks, 6 month then annually. So works out he gets his annual one in april, which suits me fantastically as this is the start of our show season hooray!
