If you ruled the world what would you like to see change to improve the lives of horses in general. Maybe together we can come up with some solutions and make a difference.

I would like to see all horses riddden 'head in front of the vertical' no matter what level from Prelim to Grand Prix. I would like rollkur to be banned from warm arenas. I would like Gerd Heuschmann to be made head of the FEI.

i would like all new riders and those considering buying a horse to read at least one natural horsemanship book,be it Monty, Rashid,Kelly Marks,Clinton Anderson or Parelli.and learn the skills of looking at life from a horses point of view.

I would like PMU farms to be banned world wide, there is a synthetic alternative, that is just as successful and does not pose the potential increased risk of breast cancer etc due to the abnormally high levels of oestrogen imposed on the human body by taking Premarin/HRT pills. Surely this is senseless cruelty where alternatives are just as good if not better? I would also agree with the above posts 100% A perhaps more controversial change I would ban whips from racing, horses are sensitive creatures they can feel a fly land on their back.

One of the few rules I could publish without being considered a bit ruthless, would be to ban any horse owner that just waffles shit and interferes to be re-educated so at least they waffle correct shit, and learn to leave people be!

Just on another note, I note EM28 put, have you seen a jump racing whip? There are strict guidelines on the use and also they are not remotely like a standard whip. I use one at home, they have a broad flat felt or nylon covered surface covering 3/5 of the shaft with the handle the remaining 1/5 and two broad flappy bits at the bottom. They make a slap sound when used and are much softer than a standard whip. The approved device is actually a plastic, narrow circumference rod that is used to beat rather than whip equine flesh. The Jockey Club requires that it should meet the following specifications: Maximum length 68cms, Minimum diameter of 1 cm, If a flap is attached to the whip, it must fall within the 68cms total length and itself have a maximum length of 10 cms and maximum width of 4cms and cannot contain any reinforcements or additions. Since 1st October 2003, it has been mandatory for National Hunt (jump) jockeys to use a whip with shock absorbing padding or cushioning throughout its circumference. This requirement does not apply to All Weather or Flat racing. The rules for new NH jockeys' whips also stipulate that there shall be no binding within 23cms of the end of the flap, and that the flap must have similar shock absorbing characteristics. The overall weight of the whip must not exceed 160 grams. The races what you are seeing is the whip being moved, and the horse not hit more than every 4 stride, as you must smack the horse (to get slapping sound) on the forward stride and give it time to respond. Fines are heavy for miss use of the stick. when you see it waved at the side of the horses face, this is to stop the horse drifting in to another horse or loosing ground by drifting, as when they are tired they will drift which is a danger to other riders, there are many other rules like you are not supposed to hit the horse more than 10 times in the race, or hit a horse that is not going to win, or hit from above shoulder level. The horses are running on adrenalin so it's unlikely that the whip will cause any discomfort that the horse will remember. I can not comment on the flat whip, but certainly the jump racing whip is my preferred choice to carry before a standard whip. Please do not take offence as no offence is intended I just thought that it may be worth explaining the difference and the use of it better. I have no problem the thoughts on banning it, as I hate to see the horses race so young and think the starting age should be raised, but its all to do with money at the end of the day, so its not going to happen. But in jumps (and I would guess in the flat too) the whip can prevent some serious accidents.

Hey Farasi thanks for the detailed information there. Some interesting things that I hadnt known, also interesting to hear your opinion, as someone who has racing experience. Not sure its swayed my opinion but certainly food for thought in that the use of the whip could prevent horses drifting and causing serious accidents. No offence taken! :-)

As an older member who Has loved Horses for as long as I can remeber, and that is a very long time.I would like to see some way of making prospective Horse and Pony owners see that owning a horse is a 7 days, 52 weeks a year commitment. This whether you look after your friend yourselve or they are at livery.A horse or pony gives you totallove andrespect. They depend on you for not only their day to day food and clean beds but for the emotionalside as well. They need to know that you love them as they love you.Don't take on the responsablity of an equine without finding out the day to day costs not only in money but in TIME.I find it so upsetting when these animals are being neglected as the welfare societies are reporting these days I'm not just wiitering on .I had as much pleasure from the day to day looking after my equine friends as the riding. Happy New Year to all Trot on Tv members from Darkie

HaHa, i love your reply farasi, about banning people from talking crap and re educating them! I think everyone in this discussion has a valid point here, i have some strong views on horse and dog ownership, and quite frankly there are just too many people armed with a little bit of knowledge that think the rest of us are stupid! The yard expert for instance, who is only too quick to give her opinion and "do you favours" and advise gullible people who dont know any better on how to care for thier horse, should be banned from DIY yards!!
