Hi Horsevet. I read an article recently which reported that they have been researching into whether horses suffer from IBS and it would seem that they do. This really interested me as I often work with horses that I suspect may have ulcers and often relate the horses behaviour to how I used to feel when I had IBS myself!! I sorted it out by cutting out wheat and gluten and took probiotics . The research for horses suggests similarly that cereal concentrates effect gut flora and a low carb, high fibre diet is better for the horses gut. It was also interesting because they think it may also be linked to laminitis. I think a lot more horses suffer with stomach problems than we realize and would appreciate your thoughts on this.

Hi. I'm certainly more in favour of feeds that don't rely on grains and pulses. Horses are designed to eat on an almost continual basis so I suspect many problems are caused by what is fed and feed management alongside overuse of antibiotics etc. Any situation that sets up a potentially toxic environment carries the risk of a laminitic episode to varying degrees. Best wishes HorseVet
