Hi all, I'm looking for some advice on feeding haylege at night!I have my horse in livery(one of the most expensive at that) and an issue has come up about haylege at night. Our horses get a haynet(average size) at 5pm and have been told thats enough till 9am the next morn..There are two late nights in the yard in which they get an armful at 9pm.. I am not happy with my horse and all the horses having nothing to eat in his stable all night.Am I over reacting?Id really love to hear you views!

I give my native a large haynet (it's really quite big!) of haylage a night, I know if he had anymore he would be obese and wouldn't sleep as he is too greedy and must finish his haynet before sleeping! So I'm not sure what kind of horse you have? But I wouldn't limit it too much for the likes of warmblood/tbs etc

Ours get hay/haylage at 5 and again at 9, large nets at 9. Then they are fed again at 7am. They also get hard feeds at 5,9 and 7am. They are all biggish horses (15.2 +) The ponies still get hay at 5, 9 and 7am, but no hard feed at 9. I wouldn't personally be happy with nothing from 5pm to 9am, that is 11 hours! Horses are supposed to trickle feed, I'm sure the haynets must be empty in a couple of hours. Sophie obviously knows callum is getting enough, but I would be concerned if my horse wasn't a good doer and wasn't getting the chance to eat! I was always taught that a horse (15hh+ ) needed 16-18lbs of hay a day, and they say more haylage is needed since the water content is higher. Have you weighed what he is getting?

Hi, I agree that is too long without forage. My big ones get a haybar stuffed with haylage at 7pm and are fed again at 6.30am. As you say they should be feeding continually for 16 hours, so the break from feed should only be a max of 8 or 9 hours a day. My mare has a field size mineral lick block in her stable (she is not a greedy horse) and I know she uses this if her haylage is finished and she is waiting for more.

Also note that my pony picks at his bed once he's done sleeping haha so isn't starved;) And gets a feed at 7pm and a feed at 7am. I agree angelalain, a not so good doer shouldn't really be limited, the TB's, WB's etc (sorry to completely stereotype but you know what I mean!) at my yard are fed on the floor, but not sure if you're familiar with the big blue wheelbarrows with two front wheels? Well they are huge anyway and they get one of them piled full of haylage a night and this seems to keep them happy in winter anyway and not drop condition.

My horse is a native, and like callum would get obese if we gave her endless amounts of hay. she get turnout all day and then has a feed first thing in the morning and afternoon. she has a largest haynet at around 5:30pm and i agree with the fact that it does go within a few hours and then theres a long gap, but she also has a mineral lick, a treat ball with feed in and she also eats most off her bed over the course of the night so im not to worried. but as your isnt a good doer then he made need something extra.

I can quite see your point about natives etc, my own pony would eat till she explodes! What I find worrying about poor Noely is that she doesn't seem to have the choice about how much her horse has to eat! Sohie and Tammy, you can both decide that your ponies don't need more etc, but Noely seems to be saying its one average haynet and thats their lot till morning (and not early morning either) I was just wondering, do people ever weigh their hay rations these days? Do any of you actually know what weight of forage you are actually giving your horse? Obviuosly you are doing it right if the horse looks ok, but how did you find out how much to feed? Who tells the ones who don't know? Its like the thread about people who know nothing and get horses, how do they get on when there is no-one to put them right?
