It is usually caused by either: Poor feet which are flat and thin in the sole, ie TB's or.... Contaminated ground which causes puncture woulds or.... Poor foot care or shoes that do not fit or are burned on to much. It would be impossible to tell without looking at his feet but try to eliminate some of the above and you may find an answer!

Check to see how deep the collateral grooves are...this will give you a good indication of sole thickness..most really sound horses are around 3/4 of an inch when measured from the hoof wall at the apex and tip of the frog. A high heel (deep groove in the back) and shallow toe (flat sole) could be an indication of some rotation of the coffin bone. Just because it's a TB does not mean that it should have poor feet...most of the poor feet I have seen are man made, lack of development of the back of the foot due to lack of exercise or poor shoeing. Over trimming of the sole or a misunderstanding of heel height.

hi ive been reading yur post and i know right now how u feel. i have a 18"2 shire thx he has been unwell with hepititis for the last 18 months and is in recovery so therefor been out of work for a long time and all his treatments caused side affects like hair loss shedding of the skin and brittle soles hes never had an abcess before untill 6 weeks ago and hes had 2 in the last 6 weeks i pulled him out the field last sunday hed only been out 2 days in the last 3 weeks coz our weather and paddocks are so bad anyway he was hoping lame couldnt walk on his back end. slow walk back to the yard and called the vet. she said the severity of lameness can mean fracture brake or bad abcess and yes it was an abcess right under the point of the frog he has a big whole oozing black puss. vet dug it out and said most likely the state of his paddock being boggy like and havin soft soles anyway hot poltis ive been doing for a week now puss coming from under the whole frog and on box rest she reccommended i use biotin but with my horse havin liver damage hes on a strict recovery diet so gotta be careful what i give him i rang my dietician and farrier who both told me to use nafs pro feet not only does it have biotin it also has all the other elements in for the feet its really made a difference in his other feet but to early to tell on the injured 1 as its poltised and bandaged everyday x

Hi there, MY horse was prone to the abscesses aswell, he had pockets in his feet so i have to clean his feet everyday an also apply a hoof ointment which was for bacteria an anti fungel, its called Sole pack an we have been abscess free for 6mths. My Farrier said that a slight nick can cause an abscess an since using this anti bacterial solution we have not had an abscess, which we would get 1 every month, hope this helps, good luck hope u find a solution like i did, Cheers

The horse i used to look after had re occuring abscesses in one hoof, it turned out she had a keratoma which is like a growth in the hoof. She had it successfully removed though it isnt nice to look at. Your farrier can usually identify if they have one apparently though ours missed it, the vet diagnosed it after god knows how long xxx
